Lesson 1. Thinking about what makes a place safe

Imagine a school playground with brightly-coloured play equipment, great places to sit, mown grass and lots flowers and plants.  

Now imagine that same playground with weeds and dead plants, long grass, rubbish, graffiti and broken play equipment.  

Look at the 3 playground images below.

  • How does each playground make you feel? 
  • Which playground would you want to play in? 
  • Which playground would you feel safer?  

When designing a safe place there are 4 things to think about:

  • Coming and going – how do people move around an area.
  • Keeping watch – how do people watch over an area.
  • Showing we care – how do people look after an area.
  • Having fun – how do people use an area in positive ways.
